What is Cognitive Behavior Therapy?

At Pivot Counseling we like to use an integrative approach to counseling, by using various theories so that each client can benefit from an array of perspectives and approaches on their path for success.

What is CBT?

CBT is a common type of collaborative talk therapy that helps the client become aware of inaccurate or negative thinking so you can view challenging situations more clearly and respond to them in a more effective way.

CBT is a form of psychological treatment that has been demonstrated to be effective for a range of problems including depression, anxiety disorders, alcohol and drug use problems, marital problems, eating disorders and severe mental illness. Numerous research studies suggest that CBT leads to significant improvement in functioning and quality of life. In many studies, CBT has been demonstrated to be as effective as, or more effective than, other forms of psychological therapy or psychiatric medications.

How does CBT work?

At the center, CBT is about identifying troubling situations or conditions in the client’s life. Once this is identified, the client works alongside the counselor to create goals they want to focus on and then follow these three steps:

  1. Become aware of their thoughts, emotions, and believes about the problem.

  2. Identify negative or inaccurate thinking.

  3. Reshape the negative or inaccurate thinking.

CBT can give you the power to cope with your situation in a healthy way and to feel better about yourself and your life. Our licensed therapist uses CBT and other evidence-based theories to assist our clients in their path to wellness.
