Core Beliefs

What are Core Beliefs?
Core Beliefs are ideas or philosophies that you hold very strongly and influence how we perceive and make sense of ourselves, other people, and the world. Two people can have the same experience, yet different core beliefs, therefore they’ll have very different interpretations or views of what occurred.

Many people have negative core beliefs and it is important to challenge them, but first they need to identify what they are. Here are a few examples:

  • I am not good enough

  • I don’t deserve love.

  • I should have known better.

  • It’s not okay to feel my emotions.

  • I am inadequate.

  • I am not smart enough.

  • I am a bad person.

  • I am a disappointment.

  • I am ugly.

  • The world is full of selfish people.

  • Everyone wants to just take and never give.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is widely used to help in identifying and understanding core beliefs. Consider working with a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor who specializes in CBT. CBT focuses on the link between your thoughts, emotions, and actions, and is evidence-based to help alleviate anxiety and depression
